Tuan Haji Mohammad Rashid, with unwavering support from his father, Haji Mohd Fahmi Vatsaloo, who retired from SHELL in 1975, founded General Industries Services Cooperation, better known today as GISSCO Sdn. Bhd. The company began its operations at 21, Jalan Setia Raja, Miri, Sarawak, marking the start of a visionary journey in the oil and gas industry.
Born and raised in Miri, Sarawak, Tuan Haji Mohammad Rashid made history as the first Bumiputera to establish an oil and gas company in Malaysia, focusing on slickline services since 1989. As the second generation in a family deeply rooted in the oil and gas sector, he recognized a golden opportunity to venture into slickline services after successfully securing his first contract. Initially, GISSCO started with food supply and offshore catering services, fields requiring minimal technical expertise, serving clients such as ESSO, Santa Fe, AG&P, and Petronas Marine in Miri and Kuala Terengganu.
This initial success paved the way for GISSCO to expand its expertise, gaining the knowledge and capacity to provide skilled manpower for maintenance and specialized oil and gas services.
With an impressive 42 years of experience spanning multiple sectors of the oil and gas industry, Tuan Haji Mohammad Rashid is a respected figure in the field. His career began in the trenches, working both onshore and offshore, where he gained hands-on experience and honed his expertise. Over the years, he formed partnerships with international oil and gas companies, contributing to offshore maintenance, the marine industry, vessel drilling, and more.
Tuan Haji Mohammad Rashid’s vision extended beyond corporate success.
He firmly believes that excellence in the oil and gas industry is built on a foundation of integrity, safety, quality, and honesty. His philosophy, “Honesty is the best policy,” remains a guiding principle at all levels of the organization.
Convinced of the potential and capability of Malaysians in the oil and gas sector, his ultimate wish was to establish a training school dedicated to nurturing talent in the industry. His legacy continues to inspire, shaping the future of GISSCO and the Malaysian oil and gas community.
